Rally4Rhinos Facts
  • The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is home to Nola, a female 41-year-old northern white rhino, one of only five left in the world. Three other northern white rhinos, one male and two females, live in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and one female lives in the Duvr Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic. These rhinos are all past reproductive age and/or have reproductive issues.
  • The northern white rhino has been brought to the brink of extinction by civil war in its native lands and by poaching.
  • There are five species of rhinos: white, black, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan. In total, there are less than 30,000 rhinos remaining on earth.
  • A rhino is poached for its horn every 8 hours. Rhino horn is made of keratin, the same thing as our fingernails. Some cultures desire the horn as a status symbol and also believe incorrectly the horn has medicinal value. At the current poaching rate, rhinos could go extinct in 15 years. San Diego Zoo Global is committed to not having rhinos go extinct on our watch and we ask you to join us in this fight.
